Question: How much protein do I need to build muscle?

Answer: For serious muscle gains, the rule of thumb is to try consume .8 to 1g of protein per pound of body weight per day. You will find many differing opinions on this number. Some people will consume 1.5 to 2g while other people will say that it could be low as .5g. Both Gabe and I try stick to around the 1 - 1.5g range and have seen great results. As published in the Arnold Blueprint workout, Arnold Schwarzenegger even stood by the 1g/day per pound of body weight. Regardless of the amount of protein you are consuming, you need to be sure that you hit the weights hard as you can drink 500g of protein per day but if you do not work hard in the gym you won't gain any muscle. Try out our daily protein intake calculator here to see how much protein you need to build muscle based on your goals.
