Furnishing a home gym can get really expensive really fast - especially if you decide to run down to the nearest Dick's sporting goods when you decide it's time to transform your garage into a gym. If there is one thing I have learned throughout the years it is that used weights are just as good as new weights. I mean heck, Gabe and I still have the plates our dad purchased back in 1975 - nothing wrong with them. That being said, when trying to purchase used weights, you need to be savvy and patient if you want to score the motherload for a cheap price.

1. Skip the second-hand stores if possible
While it may be tempting to hit-up Play It Again sports, this should not be your first option. Think about it, play it again and these other second-hand exercise equipment stores make a profit off of you - which means you could get a cheaper deal. Now I have purchased equipment from these types of stores now and then and it usually is when I need to complete a set or I need one or two plates. Never to furnish a gym.

2. CraigsList - The Mecca for Used Weights
CraigsList should be your friend. This is where people list their weights for sale in an attempt to get more $$ than they'd get from the stores mentioned above. In order to get the best deal on CraigsList, you need to be prepared to haggle and also know how to spot a good deal.

Questions to ask when you purchase weights on CraigsList

Q: Why are you selling all this stuff?

The Upgrader: There are several answers you will hear and certain answers will let you know if you can get them down off of their price. If they are "upgrading" their equipment, you are probably screwed. This person knows the value of their equipment and has a price in mind they need in order to purchase the new equipment.

The Gym Membership Guy: This person did not utilize their equipment and decided to get a gym membership instead. You may be able to get them down off the price a bit, but they will probably want close to asking.

The I need my space guy: This person had their weights in their basement and now needs the space for an office, bedroom, they're having kids. They need the equipment gone. You will have an easier time talking these guys down. Make sure to say you have cash and can come and get it TOMORROW! Most people will drop the price if they can move it fast.

The "I'm moving" guy: This is what we want! This person is moving to a new house or town and does not want to pack-up and move their equipment. They just need it sold and gone now. Feel free to come in at 50% below ask and see what they say. Make sure they know you're serious and be ready to get it that evening or weekend. Also if they decline your offer, make sure to ask them when they are moving so you can contact them back before the move to see if it is still available.

What to look for when purchasing used weights;

Purchasing bars and plates is easy. If the bars are not bent and the plates have holes in them, it is a solid buy. Core strength equipment lasts forever. You may want to look for rust but that is about all that can affect the quality of a plate.

If you're purchasing cardio equipment, make sure it runs and take it for a test drive. If it feels smooth and the electronics work you probably are safe making the purchase.

Price - know your prices. Used weights at second hand stores typically sell for $.49/lb, so if you buy weights off of someone you will want to be well below this price. Meaning if you are buying a set of 45s, you will want to pay less than $45 - I'd offer $25 and see what they say.

To see the type of deal you can find on craigslist, check-out all the equipment Luke got for $700. This guy bought a gym membership, PLUS, his wife needed the basement - I got about $2500 worth of equipment for $700!
