Whether it be Bigfoot or a fat dude with a six pack, the fact of the matter is that you've never seen either - because neither of them exist in real life! Big foot is imaginary and fat dudes, or even people with a smaller layer of fat don't have six pack abs!

I keep reading thread upon thread and post upon post on people giving advice on routines and moves to do to "get a six pack". It could be a revolutionary crunchless contraption that can fit in your purse or a 15 minute ab blaster workout guaranteed to give you the flat stomach you've always dreamed of. Regardless of the routine you choose, one thing is certain: If you have a high % of body fat, you'll NEVER get abs - plain and simple!

So, here's the 10 million dollar answer to the question "How do I get a six pack?" or "How do I get six pack abs?". Most people aren't going to like the answer, but the truth is abs start in the kitchen! You won't get a six pack if you don't eat healthy and burn fat. You can have the strongest core in the world, but if you have a layer of fat on top of your stomach, your abs will never show through!

So, if you want to get six pack abs, you need to understand that your nutrition plan is 10x more important than the ab routine you choose. Your abs are worked indirectly in most exercises you do in the gym and even if you never did another crunch in your life, but were able to drop down to 6% body fat, you would have abs...guaranteed!

Now let's say you drop down to 5 or 6% bodyfat and you want the jaw dropping six pack that everyone will drool over - this is where the ab routine becomes important. You need to have two core methods of ab work.

  1. Circuit style "burn baby burn" ab routine where you do 200-300 different moves without rest and just torch your abs.
  2. Strength ab routine to actually build bigger muscles on your abs. Most gyms will have weighted ab machines and there are several other moves you can do to add weight to your ab workout such as standing dumbbell obliques and weighted sit-ups.

So, I hope I drove home my point in that in order to get six pack abs, you need to be at a low percentage of body fat. That means laying off the pizza, doing low impact cardio, burning fat by remaining in a caloric deficit and doing a mixture of circuit and strength ab routines. So, remember, abs START in the kitchen, and are finished in the gym.
