For those of us who want huge, sleeve splitting arms we've probably spent quite a bit of time doing curls with a barbell and an EZ bar. Sure the ez bar may be better on your wrists or more convenient, but have you ever wondered if one bar will get you bigger arms than the other? Or is a curl just a curl? If straight bar curls vs ez bar curls has always been a dilemma for you...you're about to get the answer!
A recent study put the two bars to the test and tested each bar for activation of the bicep muscles during elbow flexion. The results indicated that activation of the bicep muscles was much higher when using the straight bar as opposed to using the EZ bar when lifting the bar up, but no significant differences were noted when lowering the bar.
So, that means use the barbell!
Just something to think about next time you go into the squat rack to do some curls... :)
