It's been hot lately. Here are a few tips to stay cool and safe when working out in hot weather.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of fluids (mainly water) throughout the day, not just before your workout. Try drink 16oz of water about an hour before your workout and 4oz every 15 minutes during your workout. Your body takes way longer to actually absorb the liquid than it does to sweat it out so you need to be well hydrated BEFORE you begin.

Dress Accordingly

Wear loose fitting clothes or one of the high-tech new fabrics to allow your body to breathe. Cotton is not recommended as it absorbs sweat like crazy and will stick to your skin.

Beat The Heat or Avoid it

Wake up early or workout in the evenings. You're likely to get between a 10 and 15 degree difference - and there's quite a difference between working out in 75 degree weather compared to 90!

Feel The Breeze

Open windows, doors and turn on your fans. Air circulation can help your sweat keep you cool!

Be Smart and Don't Die from Heat Exhaustion!

Heat exhaustion is real - no matter how experienced you are! Know the warning signs and if you have to cut your workout short do it!

Warning signs of heat exhaustion:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • muscle cramps
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • weakness
  • fatigue.

These tips will help you during your workouts when your body is not only working hard to lift those weights, but also fighting to stay cool.
