Q: What should I eat after a workout and why? A: This is a wildly debated topic. One side of the argument says that it does not matter if you eat immediately after a workout as long as you hit your daily nutrient goals. The other side of the debate claims there is an "anabolic window" about an hour after you workout when your body is primed and ready to absorb nutrients. So, let's just assume you believe the "anabolic window" theory and you want to eat post-workout. Most people agree that a good post-workout meal should contain some quick digesting protein and some form of simple carbs. A great post-workout meal would be to slam some whey isolate and eat a banana. I have also heard of some people going with all whole foods and just eating some chicken and brown rice or oatmeal. If you're going to a gym, the easiest post-workout meal would be, in my opinion, a protein shake and banana, or you could go with a supplement specifically designed for post-workout nutrition (if you have the cash).
