Alcohol is enjoyed by many many people. Aside from the taste the effect it has on the body (relaxing and sedating) is what people also enjoy. Regardless of how much you enjoy your alcoholic beverages, the chemical makeup of alcohol provides the perfect storm for delayed fat burning in the body. Below you'll see why alcohol contributes to fat gain and some of the better choices you can make if you are going to consume alcohol.
Alcohol has a well-established place in US culture. We consume it on holidays, parties, events, and just to chill. However, when training (and if you're not training) alcohol also has some well-documented disastrous effects on your body that include:
If those five effects above are not enough to make you steer clear of alcohol, another effect alcohol has is a negative effect on your body composition. Alcohol is made up of a compound called ethyl alcohol which supplies seven calories per gram. Compared to the traditional nutrients of traditional carbohydrates, protein and fat - alcohol, much like sugared beverages provides "empty calories". Science has shown that these empty calories are the first to be used as energy when combined with the traditional nutrients. This in-turn will postpone the fat burning process which directly promotes fat storage.
If you must consume alcohol, go for a glass of wine or scotch, vodka or gin (with a sugarless mixer).
Additional Concerns of Alcohol And Weight Gain
So we know alcohol will promote fat storage, but what are some additional concerns?
1. Alcohol contains twice as many calories as protein and carbs meaning the empty calories can pile up quickly. These calories are very concentrated and consumed as a liquid which can make someone consume many more calories than they are actually aware of.
2. Alcohol Lowers Your Inhibitions - this can be fun and relaxing, but can also lead to snacking and excessive calories being consumed.
3. Alcohol can damange your kidneys and liver - pretty self explanatory
4. Alcohol lowers Testosterone - Testosterone is the body's natural muscle building hormone - we need all we can get!
5. Alcohol Can Increase Your Appetite - If being loaded with empty calories isn't enough, alcohol can also stimulate your appetite and cause you to eat even more!
So, as with everything, consume your alcohol in moderation. Your body will thank you.
