Sure I'll admit it, avocados are not part of my typical nutrition plan. I typically only will purchase an avocado when a recipe I plan on making calls for one, however this little green nugget is one of the healthiest options out there. It is loaded with vitamins minerals, fiber and healthy fats. If you are struggling with healthy fat options and are getting sick of olive oil and almonds, an avocado might be just what you need to put a fresh spin on your nutrition plan.

Here's Why You Should Eat Avocados:

  • Avocados are a good source of potassium (35% more than a banana), fiber, and vitamins C, B6, and folate.
  • Avocados contain healthy monounsaturated fats (be careful though and only consume about 1/2 of a whole avocado per day or as much as your daily macros allow)

Sounds good so tell me how to pick a ripe one:

  • Picking avocados can be a little tricky.
  • Try to pick ones with shiny, dark green skin and no brown spots or bruises.
  • Avocados don't ripen on the tree therefore avocados at the grocery store usually aren't ripe yet.
  • An avocado is ripe when you press on the skin and its firm, but soft enough that a knife could cut it easily.
  • Sup the ripening process a bit by putting avocados in a paper bag and folding the top down.
